How do I boost my families immune system - part 2

Sugar is a pro-inflammatory food.

It is estimated that roughly 70% - 80% of your immune system resides in your gut where there is the most diverse colonies of bacteria. To maintain a healthy immune system, we must maintain a healthy gut.

Sugar is one of the most harmful substances for a healthy gut, it feeds the harmful bacteria in the gut and can cause dysbiosis of the gut microbiome (colonies of bacteria in the gut), inflammation, and leaky gut which negativity affects the immune system. To boost immunity, we have to focus on gut health.

A simple yet very effective way to start the journey of a healthy gut microbiome, is to eliminate sugar.

Sugar is hidden everywhere, processed foods, juice, cereals, not to mention all the sweet treats and pastries.

To ensure we avoid all the hidden sugars as much as possible, I avoid/limit the following products in my house:

Instant cereals

Condiments such as tomato sauce, mayo and chutney

Instant meals and sauces

Juice

Cookies/rusks

Store bought bread

Sodas and fizzy drinks

Candy and sweets

Refined sugar

What I stock up on instead:

Dates

Certified honey (no added sugar/syrup)

Apple sauce (home made)

Fresh fruit and veg to make freshly pressed juice

70-85% dark chocolate

Ingredients for home made meals without the hidden nasties

Stoneground flour and pasture reared eggs for breakfast pancakes/flapjacks and baked goods

Yoghurt and berries for frozen treats and smoothies

Sourdough starter for home made bread

Raw cacao powder for decadent hot cacoa
